Evaluation of Wear in a Hot Forging Die with a PVD Layer
Dies for forging, Wear, Fatigue, PVD, Plasma nitriding.
Wear on dies is a decisive economic factor in the production of parts by hot forging. This article shows
a study about wear due to abrasion and thermomechanical fatigue in a die used to forge a metallic part
with application in the field of hand tools. Analyzes carried out by numerical simulation showed that
fracture due to fatigue in the die during forging, together with abrasive wear, set up determinant
mechanisms for its failure. In this study, we sought to develop efficient alternatives to reduce wear and
damage to die susing the combination of two surface treatments, plasma nitriding and PVD, where in a
batch of dies only nitriding was used and in another batch, nitriding was used. nitriding with PVD, seeking
to compare the results of the two alternatives, productive tests and laboratory tests were carried out. As
previous results, the combination of nitriding with PVD demonstrated to decrease the coefficient of friction
of the forged part with the die and increased the surface hardness of the die when compared with the
results of the die only with nitriding.
