RESUMO:

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is one of the most common materials for application in 3D printing
with fused modelling deposition (FDM). However, limitation are presents in its
mechanical properties, like plasticity and toughness in high temperatures. Therefore,
new materials have been developed with better mechanical properties while maintain
printing capability. The present work aims to evaluate Polylactic Acid (PLA) and
Polypropilene (PP) blend properties, when Polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PPg-MA) is used as compatibilizer. Blends from pure PLA to pure PP were tested, with
five intermediary samples. The infrared spectrometry analysis (FTIR) indicates no
chemical modification during blends production. Differential exploratory calorimetry
(DSC) points out no miscibility between the blends components, however, the
crystallinity was strongly affected by the composition, with the smallest value for 25%
PLA and 75% PP blend. Young modulus increased 7,1% for blend containing 10% of
PP in PLA and tenacity increased 71,6% for 50% PP and 50% PLA blend when
compared with the PLA + 2% PP-g-MA. Dimension distortions generated during the
printing were minimal until the proportion of 25% PP in the blend. Therefore, the more
promising blend for FDM application was 50% PLA and 50% PP, with very low
distortion, good mechanical stiffness and high tenacity relative to the pure PLA. This
blend is indicated for applications with high mechanical requirements, without
significative geometric distortions.
